With Jose Altuve hitting .356 and Daniel Murphy hitting .350, we may be heading for the something that hasn’t been accomplished in a few years, multiple .350 hitters in the same season. The last player to hit .350 with at least 502 plate appearances (the batting title qualifying level) was Josh Hamilton in 2010. The 2009 saw the last time two players hit .350 or better, with Joe Mauer and Ichiro Suzuki finishing 1-2 in the American League. It hasn’t been accomplished by players in each league since 2004, when Ichiro and Barry Bonds led the AL and NL respectively.
Since the mound was lowered and division play started in 1969 (what I’m starting to consider the modern era), the five years without a .350 hitter represents the longest drought. Murphy path to .350 has been a downward one; he started impossibly hot, fell back, and how has hit in the .340s since the start of July. Altuve has been building to this level. We’ll see if either of them makes it all the way.
