Wednesday night the Giants send Madison Bumgarner against the Mets and Noah Syndergaard in the NL Wild Card game at Citi Field. The two pitchers posted similar seasons, Syndergaard finishing with a 2.60 ERA, Bumgarner with a 2.74 ERA. Both struck out a ton of batters and walked very few, but Syndergaard proved better at keeping the ball in the park.
That difference may decide the game. Both pitchers keep opponent batters from reaching base often, so it is difficult to produce a rally. When that’s the case, the long ball is the best way to score runs. The Mets hit 218 home runs in 2016, second most in the NL. The Giants hit 130 home runs, the third fewest in the NL. Syndergaard should reinforce the weakness of the Giants batters, while Bumgarner is susceptible to the Mets strength. This could easily be a 2-1 game where two solo homers by New York win the game.
