Trusted Design

Watching the first game at SunTrust Park, I’m struck at how this design has become the new cookie cutter park. Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Busch Stadium, Turner Field, and now SunTrust have the same kind of design; entering from centerfield, wide concourses brick walls, etc. In the 1960s and 70s, the multi-use cookie cutters were in vogue, but turned out to be poor venues for baseball. This new, popular design beats that old one hands down. Teams have managed to put little unique touches on these parks, but I understand why everyone likes this design. It works really well.

Luckily, enough teams, like the Mets, Yankees, and Marlins still find ways to make park unique. There’s plenty of room for both. The Braves lead the Padres early, 2-1 in top of the second.
