Random Player Report

The Random Evil Player program selected Sandy Leon for the next review. Leon is a switch hitting catcher for the Boston Red Sox. He really is a platoon player, useful offensively against left-handed pitchers, a black hole of outs against right-handers.

As one might expect for a light-hitting catcher, Leon’s value comes mostly from his defense. FanGraphs rates his career offense 29 runs below average, his career defense 26 runs above average. His catching skills appear to be about average, a little below blocking pitches, a little above throwing out runners. Where he excels is fielding his position, as he rates highly on turning batted balls into outs. He is a solid part time catcher.
