The Pirates Throws in the Towel

I did not think the trade of Gerrit Cole meant the Pirates were giving up on the season, but now Andrew McCutchen follows in Barry Bonds‘s footsteps and heads to San Francisco. The Pirates get Bryan Reynolds and Kyle Crick.

McCutchen will be a free agent at the end of the season, and will play 2018 as a 31-year-old. He is an excellent player, but on the decline, and the Pirates decided that keeping him wasn’t in the long-term interest of the club. Crick got a cup of coffee with the Giants last season. He will play 2018 as a 25-year-old, so he is not a young prospect. He posted good strikeout numbers in the minors, but walked a ton of batters. Reynolds played 2017 as a 21-year-old, his first season in professional ball. He hit .312 with a .363 OBP and doubles power at three levels of A ball.

In both the McCutchen and Cole trades, the Pirates took pitchers with walk problems. Pittsburgh has been good at fixing those in the past, and we’ll see if they can do so again.

The Giants pick up another good but aging player, as they earlier obtained Even Longoria. McCutchen, Longoria, and Buster Posey in the middle of the order should make for some fireworks.
