Random Player Report

The Random Evil Player program selected Darren O’Day for the latest evaluation. O’Day servered as a mainstay of the Orioles bullpen since 2012, and in that time owns one of the lowest ERAs among pitchers who mostly serve as relievers in the majors.

Note that in that time period, a low walk rate represented O’Day’s strength. He struck out plenty of batters, but not at the rate of other elite relievers. His home run rate stood high, likely do to Camden Yards.

O’Day’s walks are not aging well, however. From 2012 through 215 he averaged 2.1 walks per nine innings for the Orioles, helping him to a 1.92 ERA. In 2016-2017, his walk rate rose to 3.6 batters per nine innings, and his ERA rose to 3.55. His strikeouts are up quite a bit in that time, but the trade-off doesn’t seem worth it.

Overall, in ten seasons in the majors O’Day posted consistently good numbers. He’s been one of the best non-closers in the game in that period.
