From Below to Above

The Cardinals and Blue Jays swapped birds:

Randal Grichuk wasn’t too thrilled about the idea of playing in a reserve role this season for the St. Louis Cardinals.

He won’t have to worry about that any more.

The Cardinals traded the 26-year-old outfielder to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday for reliever Dominic Leone and minor league pitcher Conner Greene.

Carson Cistulli notes that Grichuk is an average major league outfielder. That level could not crack the Cardinals starting three, but he is above average on the Blue Jays. He’s only above average due to his power, however. Grichuk does a poor job of getting on base.

Leone is a blow the batters away reliever, while Greene is less that impressive to me. He spent five seasons in the minors and has not reached AAA. At AA his three true outcomes were 6.2 K per 9IP, 5.1 BB per 9 IP, and 0.5 HR per 9 IP. That’s all good for a 4.89 ERA in 226 1/3 innings. I would not hold my breath for him to make the majors.

The Cardinals moved an extra player for some needed bullpen help. Not a bad move.
