Random Player Report

The Evil Player Program selected Matt Bush for the next player evaluation. Bush pitches in relief for the Texas Rangers. Bush reached the majors at age 30, unusual for any player from North America. Unfortunately, Bush lacks a feel good story as the reason for his late arrival stems mostly from 39 months spent in prison for a drunk driving incident in which he hit an elderly man. It was the last of a string of violent incidents that occurred during his life.

Bush pitched well in his rookie year of 2016, posting a 2.48 ERA in 61 2/3 innings, with excellent strikeout, walk and home run rates. All three of those rose in 2017. A higher K rate of 10 per 9 IP should have lowered his hit rate, however, and balanced the other two. That didn’t happen, however, as his BA allowed went from .196 to .264, and his ERA rose to 3.78. Despite mixing in a sinker more in 2017, his fly ball rate went up. Bush may be a good example of batters adjusting to higher velocity pitchers.
