The Astros at the Red Sox features a pair of struggling aces as Dallas Keuchel faces David Price. (I’m upset that we missed a Price-Fister match-up by one day.) Keuchel’s 4.70 ERA looks like a problem with his walk rate, 2.0 per 9 IP in 2015, 3.9 per 9 IP this year. Watch to see if Price fixed his hand-leg connection mechanics, although his .364 BA allowed with men in scoring position makes this seem like an extreme run of bad luck.
Vince Velasquez tries to continue his rise to stardom as he leads the Phillies against the Braves and Aaron Blair. Velasquez has been hit harder on the road this year, but most pitchers will take his .227/.301/.318 opposition slash line away from home. Blair owns a good 3.31 ERA, but his nine walks with just five strike outs in 16 1/3 innings does not bode well for continued success.
Johnny Cueto and Zach Greinke square off as the Giants play the Diamondbacks in a division where the five teams are separated by just 2 1/2 games. Cueto is showing his usual great control striking out 44 and walking just eight in 50 2/3 innings. Greinke owns a 7.61 ERA at home, 2.25 on the road. All five of the home runs he allowed came in Arizona.
Finally, Mets pitchers will see if they can continue their home run hitting as Bartolo Colon takes on the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw. The old Dominican is pitching like a young man, striking out 33 in 38 innings, and holding left-handed batters to a .200 BA. While we tend to focus on Kershaw’s Ks, since his first full season in 2009, Kerhsaw owns the lowest HR per 9 IP rate in the majors among pitchers with 800 innings. It would be very surprising is Colon took Kershaw deep.
Enjoy!
