Price Fixing

Via the Boston Globe, Dustin Pedroia may have identified the mechanical problem with David Price:

Pedroia was watching video of himself facing Price two and three years ago when he picked up a difference in Price’s mechanics between then and now. The left-hander used to move his hands more in sync with his front leg when he started his delivery, and he wasn’t doing that anymore.

Prior to another poor start on Saturday, Price had been working on his leg lift and the positioning of his front foot. But he hadn’t connected it to his hands, which this season have barely moved as he’s started his delivery.

“I want my hands and my right knee to be connected by a string,” Price said Sunday. “My hands have stayed right here, and that’s not allowing me to get my full leg lift. It’s been about a half of what I’m used to. It gives me no margin of error because I don’t have that rhythm.”

Price’s strikeout and walk rates indicate he’s not that far off from a good season. He is 30 years old, however, starting his past-prime time in MLB. I suspect repeating your mechanics consistently is one of the things that deserts as we age.
