The Strange Season of David Price

David Price continued his strange season as the Red Sox lost to the Yankees 8-2 Saturday afternoon. Price came into the day with a 6.14 ERA, and his six earned runs allowed in 4 2/3 innings increased that to 6.75. Price’s process appears to be very good, however. He entered the day with 12.03 K per 9 and just 2.21 walks per nine innings. The walks are in line with his career, and the strikeouts are better than his career numbers. His home run rate is up a bit, but his FIP stood at 2.88 over three runs lower than his ERA. Not surprisingly, his BABIP is very high. I’m not sure it’s bad luck either, as his line drive % is very high. It really appears Price is two pitchers at the same time. One show great control and blows away batters, the other one who serves up meatballs. I would bet on the control and K winning out in the end, but right now, it looks like the Red Sox might have wasted some money.
