Matt Boyd made a mechanical adjustment on the advice of his pitching coach, and it changed his velocity:
According to Brooks Baseball, Matt Boyd’s average fastball velocity rose from 91.3 mph in his last start a week ago to 93 mph on Saturday. His maximum speed went from 93.6 mph to 96.3 mph.
The release point data also show that the in delivery was very real, not just talk.
A side-by-side comparison of Boyd’s last start and Saturday’s start shows a difference of several inches both vertically and horizontally.
“In reality maybe it’s only a few inches. But it feels like I’m throwing sidearm now,” Boyd said. “It just lets my arm move freely.”
That’s a wow. Kudos to Rich Dubee for the suggestion. Boyd goes on to say that his release point was inconsistent. I supposed that Dubee may have just gotten Boyd to concentrate on a consistent release point, but we’ll see if he can keep this going.
On a side note, I remember Dubee’s from my youth:
