Games of the Day

For the second series in a row, first place teams battle in Washington as Cleveland sends Trevor Bauer against the Nationals and Max Scherzer. Bauer sees his best results on the road this season, 5-2 with a 3.36 ERA. That’s a run and a half better than his home ERA, despite very similar three true outcomes. He’s a good example of how luck can distribute a player’s statistics. His overall ERA is in line with his FIPs. Scherzer has a long track record against the Indians with mixed results. He owns a 9-4 record in 19 starts, but with a 4.42 ERA.

The four day Alex Rodriguez farewell tour begins with the Yankees traveling to Boston to face the Red Sox Luis Severino takes on Rick Procello. Severino’s strikeout and walk rates are very much in line with his excellent minor league numbers. He simply has been hammered by home runs in the majors. Porcello’s overall walk rate is impressive this season, but he walked just four in 30 innings since the All-Star game to make it even better.

Zack Greinke returns to the Diamondbacks rotation in New York against the Mets and Steven Matz. During Greinke’s stint on the disabled list, the Diamondbacks rotation posted a 5.73 ERA. Greinke owns a 1.85 ERA on the road this season, so returning at Citi Field should put him in a good position to succeed. Matz pitched better than his 8-8 record, and I suspect better than his 3.63 ERA. His three true outcomes are all good to excellent, but he allows a ton of extra base hits with men on base.

Finally, the Phillies send Vince Velasquez against the Dodgers and Kenta Maeda. Velasquez strikes out fewer batters on the road than at home, which led to more hits and a higher ERA. Maeda ill timed his hits allowed this season, as overall opponents are .220/.280/.343 against him, but .278/.366/.481 with runners in scoring position.

Enjoy!
