J.A. Happ pitched six shutout innings against the Rays on Wedensday as the Blue Jays win 7-0. He struck out seven for his 16th win, propelling him into first place in Tom Tango AL Cy Young points. He leads Hamels by 0.3 points. Hamels owns the better ERA (slightly) and struck out more batters, but Happ owns four more wins, and that’s enough to push him over the top. It remains a very tight AL race for top pitcher, with Chris Sale less than four points behind the leaders.
With the Orioles losing 1-0 to Oakland thanks to eight in-play shutout innings by Ross Detwiler, Toronto now owns a one game lead in the AL East.
