What Cubs Slump

The Cubs beat the Angels 3-1 Wednesday night, winning their ninth game in a row and twelve of their last 13. The starting pitching, which looked old and tired right before the All-Star break, got back in the groove. In their last 13 starts, they own a 10-1 record and a 1.73 ERA. The only game in which the starters allowed more than three runs was the spot start by Brian Matusz. The Cubs won that poor outing 7-6 to start the current winning streak.

You can see just how good this group pitched over that time by looking at the game score report. The Nationals posted an average game score of 60.7 in that time, which is fantastic. It’s only good for second place, however, as the Cubs average game score is 65.7!

The Cubs are now 30 games over .500 with a 12 game lead in the NL Central and a 4 1/2 game lead for best record in the league. They can cruise into the playoffs at this point.
