Improving Batted Ball Classification

Micah Daley-Harris uses StatCast data to do a better job than the human eye of classifying batted balls as fly or line drive. He uses launch angle and arc angle.

Of course, if you have the StatCast data, your don’t need the batted ball classification. You just need a probabilistic model based on the parameters of the ball (launch angle, exit velocity, spin, spray angle, fielder positioning) to determine the probability of a hit or an out. There really is no need to compartmentalize if you have all the data.
