Playoff Atmosphere

The Nationals beat the Giants 1-0 in a tight, well played game that could have gone either way at a number of points. Three events stand out, however.

In the top of the fourth, Buster Posey doubled, and was at second with two out when Joe Panik singled to center. Third base coach Roberto Kelly held Posey at third, and Gregor Blanco grounded out to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, an error by Daniel Murphy, playing first base, put Giants on second and third with two out. Brandon Belt then launched a long fly ball to center. Ben Revere took a poor route, got turned around, and it looked like the ball was going to go over his head. With his back to the infield, he reached up and made the catch to end the inning.

The next batter, Wilson Ramos, led off the bottom of the inning with a home run for the only run of the game. It was the second hit for the Nationals, and the last of the game for the team.

Bumgarner gets an eight inning complete game, walking two and striking out seven. He lowered his ERA to 2.20. Tanner Roark pitched seven shutout innings, allowing five hits and three walks. Shawn Kelley and Mark Melancon pitched two perfect innings in relief, combining for three strikeouts.

I’d love to see these two teams face off in the post-season again.
