Ichiro comes up with one out in the top of the seventh, the Miami Marlins leading the Rockies 8-6. He hits a long fly ball to right. For a second it looked like it might leave the park, but it hits the wall just out of the reach of the leaping rightfielder, and Ichiro gets a triple for his 3000th hit, his 93th triple. He is the second player to reach 3000 hits in 16 seasons, the other being Pete Rose. Paul Molitor is the only other player to reach 3000 with a triple.
Ichiro scores on a Jeff Mathis single, and the Marlins lead 9-6.
Congratulations to one of the best and most unusual hitters in the history of the game!
Update: Seven of the last 10 players to reach 3000 hits did so with an extra-base hits. Fifteen of the first 20 were on singles.
