Starting Over

The Nationals beat the Diamondbacks 10-4 Tuesday night, the third game in a row the Diamondbacks allowed at least ten runs. It was their fifth game in 17 since the All-Star break allowing 10 runs or more. In terms of average game score, the DBacks starters are the worst in the majors in that period. Game scores, as devised by Bill James, assign points to positive aspects of pitching, going deep in games and striking out batters, and negative points to the opposite aspects of the game, allowing hits, runs, and walks. While the DBacks are low in the positives, they are by no means the worst in the league. It’s the negatives that kill them; they are giving up a lot of hits and walks, and that leads to the most runs.

No one has been immune. Braden Shipley, with just two starts, owns the best ERA since the break, 4.76. Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller were supposed to anchor the rotation. With Miller falling apart and Greinke hurt, there was no depth to save the starters. I suspect that lately they are going deeper in games than they should, since the bullpen in constantly being called into action, and they need a rest eventually. It seems at the moment that the Diamondbacks, as far as starting pitching, is in a bit of a death spiral.
