Trade Day Theme

Dave Cameron finds the theme in the deadline deals:

But while the types of veteran upgrades acquired by contenders were quite different, there was one central theme that seemed to run through almost every trade; buyers giving up on previously well-regarded players currently in the midst of devaluing themselves. Or, if you want to look at it from a more optimistic viewpoint, sellers targeting buy-low young talents who might have a chance to prove that their current struggles are just a blip on the radar.

I think that’s one reason the Yankees wanted a quantity of players from teams. Some of them are indeed going to stay on the downside, the New York doesn’t need many to turn into quality ballplayers. The Yankees are targeting the free-agent class of 2018, when there are likely to be three early prime superstars available. If they get three of these prospects to be decent players, then add two of Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, and Jose Fernandez, they will have the super team they want. The low cost of prospects now will help them spend to fill in the team when the money becomes available.
