Opposite Ends of the Spectrum

A little known feature of the Day by Day Database is the Bill James Starting Pitcher Historical Rankings. When Bill published the formula a few years ago, I coded it into the DBD, and asked James for permission to use it. He wanted to keep up-to-date information for his own site, so we agreed I would publish numbers no earlier than two year ago.

The latest I have as of this writing is at the link above. I noticed that the top ten hold up pretty well. They are all considered good pitchers, although some had their ups and down. I saw Clayton Kershaw at the top of the list and wondered who would be at the bottom. It was Jhoulys Chacin. Those two pitchers faced each other in the Padres game at the Dodgers. Kershaw pitched great, walking none and striking out eight in seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned. Chacin lasted just 3 1/3 innings giving up eight hits, two walks, and nine runs. That list appeared to be a pretty good predictor of today’s outcome. The Dodgers lead the Padres 12-3 in the top of the eighth inning.
