Here is the list of the 149 players who became free agents today. A large number of free agents is good for teams. The large supply keeps the price low. The other thing that strikes me looking at the list is that the great majority of free agents are role players. They pitch in relief, or their careers have declined to the point where they would be a fifth starter or swing man.
One player who interests me is Zack Cozart. His age 31 season, a point where he should be declining, was offensively far and above anything he accomplished before. That kind of offense at shortstop if valuable. He did hit more fly balls, and he hit them harder, and more of them left the park, so maybe he’s one of those launch angle converts. I would be taking his 2017 season with a big grain of salt. We’ll see if teams feel that way was well.
