When Is a Starter Not a Starter?

There was an unusual situation in the Seattle game at Detroit Thursday afternoon. Starter Adrian Sampson took the mound, but injured himself warming up for the first inning. He did not throw a pitch in the game:

Manager Scott Servais summoned Vidal Nuno from the bullpen.

Since Sampson didn’t throw an actual pitch to a batter, Nuno will be the starter of record, according to the official scorer.

Sampson will appear in the box score in the pitcher’s spot in the order, despite not pitching in the game.

The Tigers won the game 5-4 in ten innings, as the four Seattle homers were all solo shots, and the Tigers won on a walk-off wild pitch.
