Pirates Puttering Out

Jake Arrieta and the Cubs bullpen combined to shutout the Pirates 6-0 Friday afternoon, the first time the Pirates were shutout this season. That also made them the last team to be shutout this season. It seems fitting, as the Pirates offense stinks in June. They have now scored 52 runs in 16 June games, 3.25 runs per game. That’s the worst mark in the National league, and only the Royals at 2.93 runs per game scored at a lower rate in June.

The Pirates did not score despite working Arrieta hard. They forced him to throw 112 pitches in six innings. They worked four walks but struck out 13 times, so all those extra pitches didn’t lead to a lot of damage. Arrieta gave up just two of the three Pirates hits on the day, and all three were singles.
