Team Offense, Detroit Tigers

The 2019 series on team offense continues with the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers finished twenty sixth in the majors and fourteenth in the American League in 2018 with 3.89 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Ron Gardenhire order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 4.69
  • Probable lineup: 4.55
  • Worst lineup: 4.40
  • Regressed lineup: 4.31

It’s tough for me to believe a team can improve a lineup with Pirates cast-offs, but the Tigers do look somewhat better than last season. Josh Harrison should raise second base and lead-off stats from terrible to meh. Jordy Mercer should provide a bit more OBP at shortstop.

A bigger boost would come from keeping Miguel Cabrera healthy. He’s only played one full season in his last four. Keeping his bat in the lineup for 150 games will make the offense better.

There is no depth on this team, so an injury to Cabrera or Nick Castellanos could doom the team to another sub 4.0 R/G season.
