Gold for Goldschmidt

Paul Goldschmidt reportedly is close to a $130 million, five year extension with the Cardinals. This deal would take effect after his current contract plays out at the end of the 2019 season. The Cardinals will pay Goldschmidt $144.5 million in total during their six years of control.

The Cardinals felt their best edge was to surround Goldschmidt with Cardinals history and Cardinals tradition and sellout crowds and then present him with one of the largest offers ever from the club. It is an approach that worked for Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds, and, most recently, Matt Holliday. Their success in aquiring or wooing top free agents had waned in recent years, as Jason Heyward opted for Chicago after a year in St. Louis and Giancarlo Stanton invoked a no-trade clause to block a move to the Cardinals.

I project Goldschmidt to produce about 23.4 during the next six seasons, which should be worth around $234 million on the free agent market. The Cardinals are paying him about $6.2 million per expected WAR, which seems to be high compare to other recent extensions. So even if Goldschmidt falls off a bit, the Cardinals should make out well in the end.
