Team Offense, San Francisco Giants

The 2019 series on team offense continues with the San Francisco Giants. The Giants finished twenty ninth in the majors and fourteenth in the National League in 2018 with 3.72 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Bruce Bochy order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. For the pitchers, I used the actual numbers from the 2018 Giants. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 4.21
  • Probable lineup: 3.89
  • Worst lineup: 3.59
  • Regressed lineup: 3.88

Are the Giants even trying? Yes, they tried to get Bryce Harper, but they appear to have done nothing else to improve the offense. On top of that, they don’t get to the two best players in the order, Buster Posey and Brandon Belt until the four-five slots. I understand not leading off with Posey, as the LAT suggests, but can they at least bat Belt second?

What happened to Evan Longoria‘s ability to get on base? As players age, they usually get a bit better at drawing walks, but Longoria is swinging at a higher percentage of outside the zone pitches as the gets older. This may be where he misses Joe Maddon. I remember Maddon taking Longoria for drills to improve his acuity seeing the ball. Maybe Maddon not drilling that into him constantly cost Longoria his batting eye.

There is no power to go along with a lack of getting on base. Even the pitchers are terrible hitters. Giants fans hoping for a fourth World Series title this decade are going to miss out.
