Team Offense, Seattle Mariners

The 2019 series on team offense continues with the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners finished tied for twenty first in the majors and eleventh in the American League in 2018 with 4.18 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Scott Servais order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 5.01
  • Probable lineup: 4.99
  • Worst lineup: 4.81
  • Regressed lineup: 4.59

As I was typing in the stats to the LAT I was thinking, “This looks like a lineup the LAT might produce. I knew the LAT would bat Dee Gordon eighth, but the two lineups agree on Mitch Haniger second and Edwin Encarnacion fourth. It also puts Mallex Smith ninth, which serves more as a lead-off hitter the second time through the lineup.

The big difference is Omar Narvaez batting second in the LAT versus seventh in the Mariners order. Narvaez gets on base like a table setter, but as a catcher he probably should bat lower in the order to save his legs. There is an order near the bottom of the top 30 that is close to the default (Smith leading off, Haniger second) that bats bats Narvaez ninth. I have to agree with that one. Rest the catcher as much as possible, but take advantage of his OBP the second time through the order.

The Mariners did a nice job of retooling the lineup with high OBP players. When they get Kyle Seager back, they’ll have a bit more power. Things are looking up offensively in the Pacific Northwest.
