Oakland hosts the Mariners in Japan to start the 2019 MLB season. The game will be broadcast at 5:30 AM EDT on ESPN.
Marco Gonzales takes the hill for the Mariners. Gonzlaes posted a 13-9 record in 2018 despite a 4.00 ERA. He showed impressive control, walking just 32 batters in 166 2/3 innings. This is his age 27 season, so expect his best.
Mike Fiers starts for the Athletics. Fiers posted a 3.56 ERA in 2018 despite allowing 32 home runs in 172 innings. Twenty one of those came with the bases empty. Like Gonzales, he issues few walks, so that strength somewhat offsets the weakness in home runs.
