Team Offense, Arizona Diamondbacks

The 2019 series on team offense continues with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks finished twentieth in the majors and tenth in the National League in 2018 with 4.28 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Torey Lovullo order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. For the pitchers slot, I used the Diamondbacks actual results from 2018. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 4.22
  • Probable lineup: 4.07
  • Worst lineup: 3.74
  • Regressed lineup: 4.00

When a team trades away one of the best hitters in the majors, it’s tough for them to improve. With Paul Goldschmidt gone, the Diamondbacks best 2019 lineup does not measure up to their team average from 2018.

The order is a good order, however. Lovullo gets the split right, with agreement with the LAT on the one and five slots, with Ketel Marte leading off and Jake Lamb finishing that offensive sequence (or starting the next). They have the same players in between in a slightly different order, and the same players six through nine, in a slightly different order.

Note that the LAT tends to bat Adam Jones seventh. That’s the spot for the weakest position player on an NL team. The low interest in Jones becomes apparent in this light. Why would a team pay top dollar for a player who projects as the weakest hitter on a weak offensive team?

As a whole, the team doesn’t get on base well, and doesn’t project to power in a park that favors power. Of course, with a lack of runs, maybe the games will play faster. The commissioner would like that.
