Team Offense, Minnesota Twins

The 2019 series on team offense continues with the Minnesota Twins. The Twins finished thirteenth in the majors and sixth in the Amercian League in 2018 with 4.56 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Rocco Baldelli order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 4.90
  • Probable lineup: 4.83
  • Worst lineup: 4.65
  • Regressed lineup: 4.49

Baldelli does an excellent job with his lineup. The Twins are balanced enough that their worst lineup is not that different than their best, making the task a bit easier. The LAT agrees with Jorge Polanco in the lead-off slot. The LAT has Jason Castro and Byron Buxton at the bottom of the order, but switched. The LAT also swaps Marwin Gonzalez and Jonathan Schoop in the five and six slots.

What I like about the Twins order is that they they stack what power they have nicely in the two through five slots. In fact, the 18th best lineup is very much like the one published at RotoChamp.

It’s not a great lineup compared to other AL teams, but the young core of Polanco, Buxton, Eddie Rosario, and Max Kepler are all in their early primes or younger. There is plenty of room for improvement with that group.

Nelson Cruz and Marwin Gonzalez are nice veteran additions. Things are once again looking up in the Twin Cities.
