It’s Albies About the Benjamins

The Braves sign Ozzie Albies to a long-term extension:

For the second time in a week, the Atlanta Braves locked up a young piece of its core, this time assuring Ozzie Albies could be in place for up to nine years.

“I’m happy to be here,” the second baseman said during Thursday’s press conference to announce his seven-year, $35 million extension. “I feel like I’m home here and that’s why I chose this contract.”

The deal, which includes two option years, could be worth up to $45 million, keeping the Curacao native in a Braves uniform through the 2028 season.

The Indians did this in the early 90s, locking up the core of a team that would go to the World Series twice. They avoided salary arbitration, they avoided losing players in their primes to free agency, and they were able to make trades when needed because the contracts were reasonable. Deals like this have tons of positives for the teams, and the players become multi-millionaires. Not a bad trade.

At seasonal age 22, Albies would become a free agent for his seasonal age 27 season, right in his prime. If he stays a three WAR player, he would likely get a contract in the $30 to $40 million per year range. Albies is leaving money on the table but he is erasing uncertainty.
