Kershaw’s Return

Clayton Kershaw had a rough first inning Monday night, but overall pitched well in his return from a shoulder issue. He walked none and struck out six in seven innings of work, and the two-run homer by Yasiel Puig were the only runs the Reds scored off him.

STATS, Inc., reports Kershaw’s fastball velocity last night between 88 and 91 MPH. That might be down a bit from last year, and over the last few seasons his velocity has fallen, with a big drop last season. Kershaw has other weapons and outstanding control, and so far he weathered the change well. Starting pitchers sometimes have a tough time adjusting to the loss of velocity when they are past their primes. Kershaw was already a crafty lefty on top of being an overpowering pitcher, so the transition may not be too bad for him.

The Dodgers win 4-3 in a game that saw both closers give up runs in the ninth inning, including a game-winning home run by Joc Pederson.
