Missing the Boss

The lack of baseball news around Christmas the last few years makes me miss George Steinbrenner:

The Yankees are the only team in baseball that doesn’t close down for a week at Christmas. When Brian Cashman was renegotiating his contract last fall, he insisted on a clause guaranteeing him time off over the holidays. Steinbrenner honored the clause in his fashion. On Christmas Eve, he took David Wells to lunch and offered him a two-year contract. Cashman is supposedly responsible for trades, but he didn’t know anything about the Wells deal until Steinbrenner interrupted his vacation to tell him about it. “He is always in charge, and you have to respect that,” Cashman said. “He will give you some autonomy at some moments, but you also have to be prepared to be stripped of that at any time.” For his part, Steinbrenner defines his role as overseeing the work of others. “I’ve got a favorite saying that I tell them they should remember,” he told me. “ ‘The speed of the pack is determined by the pace of the leader.’ ”

Merry Christmas!
