Jose Bautista caused a fight in the top of the eighth inning in the game between the Blue Jays and the Rangers. With Bautista on first, Justin Smoak grounded the ball to Adrian Beltre at third. Beltre threw to second, where Rougned Odor caught the ball to force Bautista. Bautista, however, slid straight at the base, but he came in with his knees up to take out Odor. Although it was out of the frame at the time, I assume Odor went after Bautista after the throw went wide at first. Just saw the replay, and Odor hit Bautista in the chest with both hands, then landed a right cross to Bautista’s jaw. It was the best landed punch I’ve ever seen in a baseball fight.
Adrian Beltre grabbed Bautista and pulled him out of the way, but both benches emptied. It was quite the scrum. John Gibbons, who was thrown out of the game earlier, came back on the field. He’ll be heavily fined.
The umpires called an illegal slide, the Rangers were awarded the double play, and they go to the bottom of the eighth leading the Blue Jays 7-6. Looking at the box score, I notice Bautista was hit by a pitch (why he was on base), as was Edwin Encarnacion earlier in the game.
Update: Prince Fielder is hit with the first pitch of the bottom of the inning. It hit him just below the buttocks, his least vulnerable area.
