Red Hot

Just how hot is the Boston Red Sox offense? Since May 8th, a span covering eight games, Boston scored at least five runs in each game, averaging 9.75 runs per game. The Orioles come in second at 6.71 runs per game in seven games, three runs less per game. The team as a whole is posting Ted Williams type numbers, with a .353/.413/.627 slash line. With no one on they are reaching base at a .388 clip, and with men on base they are slugging .721. Eleven of their 17 home runs in the span came with men on base.

One of the beneficiaries of this offense is Jackie Bradley, Jr. He extended his hit streak on Sunday to 21 games with a 1 for 5. Five at bats for a low in the order hitter (he hit sixth yesterday) is pretty good. Because the team as a whole reaches base so much, individual batters get more chances to get a hit in a game. The chance of someone who gets a hit in 25% of plate appearance to get one hit in 4 PA is 68%. In 5 PA, it’s 76%. So more team offense gives Bradley a higher probability of getting a hit on any given day, helping keep the streak alive.
