The Phillies beat the Cardinals 1-0 Tuesday night behind seven shutout innings by Aaron Nola. The short shutout is even more impressive when you consider that the Cardinals are the second highest scoring team in the NL, and they were playing at home. Nola dominated the game, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out seven. He lowered his ERA to 2.93 and his batting average allowed to .176.
Nola looks like the real deal. He went through the minors quickly, and at seasonal age 23 he still has upside. Already, he’s performed better in the majors than he did in the minors. He throws a two-seam fastball that seems to induce a lot of ground balls when he’s not striking out batters. He keeps his walks low.
If the Phillies keep surprising, look for Nola to be in the Cy Young conversation at the end of the year.
