With a 6-3 win over the Astros Thursday night, The Mariners open up a 2 1/2 game lead in the AL West. The Mariners are starting to remind me of the Orioles teams of the past few years. Dan Duquette embraced the Bill James philosphy of asking what a player can do, and the Mariners under Jerry Dipoto appear to have done the same. Look at the team on offense (players by most at bats):
- Robinson Cano — Gets on base and hits for power
- Nelson Cruz — Gets on base and hits for power
- Kyle Seager — Draws walks, hits for power
- Nori Aoki — Decent OBP at the top of the order
- Ketel Marte — Hits for average
- Leonys Martin — Hits for power
- Adam Lind — The one person not contributing offensively
- Seth Smith — Gets on base and hits for power
- Chris Iannetta — Gets on base, some pop.
- Franklin Gutierrez — Draws walks
- Dae-ho Lee — Gets on base and hits for power
The Mariners still can’t find a first baseman who can hit, but maybe they’ll come up with someone during the season, or just move Lee to the spot. It doesn’t look like a great offense, but right now they are second in the AL in runs per game at 4.57 RPG. Nice job by the Mariners of getting a lot out of a little.
