The 2019 series on team offense continues with the Atlanta Braves. The Braves finished tied for ninth in the majors in the majors and tied for fourth in the National League in 2018 with 4.69 runs scored per game.
I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Brian Snitker order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. The actual numbers from 2018 were used for the Washington pitchers. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):
- Best lineup: 4.91
- Probable lineup: 4.62
- Worst lineup: 4.17
- Regressed lineup: 4.35
I like that the Braves are putting their big power trio of Josh Donaldson, Freddie Freeman, and Ronald Acuna 2-3-4 in the lineup. They are the three best hitters on the team, and stacking them together high will get them to the plate early and often.
The LAT agrees with Acuna batting fourth, putting him in the cleanup slot in all of the top lineups. It often likes Donaldson second, but show Donaldson leading off often, behind Ender Inciarte in the ninth slot. It’s another case of improving the lineup simply by shifting a few hitters ahead one slot. If you look at lineup number three, it has a lot in common with the default order.
The bottom of the order is a bit weaker compared to the Nationals. Donaldson may need to stay healthy for the team to realize the potential of this order, but there’s plenty of upside in their young players.
