Sometimes Contact Doesn’t Work

The Royals offense did their thing against Gio Gonzalez Monday night. Gonzalez came into the game with a high strikeout rate, but the Royals would not allow him to strike out batters. He record one K in six innings with two walks, so 21 of the Royals 24 batters put the ball in play. That’s Royals baseball.

Monday night it didn’t work. Kansas City managed just four hits against Gonzalez as the balls kept finding the gloves of the Washington defenders. That wasted a good start by Edinson Volquez, who walked one and struck out seven in 7 2/3 innings, and the Nationals win 2-0.

Gonzalez is off to a great start, and appears to have changed his pitching pattern. He used to throw the four and two seam fastballs at about the same rate, but this season he is throwing the two-seam fastball less and his change-up more. The mix is working well for him.
