You Can Never Have Too Many Shortstops

Gleyber Torres, a Yankees prospect at shortstop, is hitting. Didi Gregorius is ensconced at the position, however:

Now, the organization’s top position prospect, Torres, will get a taste of something besides short next week when he plays second base.

“I don’t know which day, but I know I have him listed for a day in the next three or four days,’’ said Joe Girardi, who explained there are no plans for Torres to play third at the moment.

The Yankees have two other young shortstops that are trying other positions as well.

Shortstops are valuable commodities. Most are above average defenders. If one can hit very well, a team can move that defense to another hole on the club, since most of this type of player can adjust to a less demanding defensive position. Shortstops are also good trading chips, as other teams can use them the same way to fill holes. This group, along with the catching wolf pack, gives the Yankees a lot of flexibility to improve the team.
