The Occasional Great Season

Colby Rasmus came into today with a career slash line of .245/.316/.446. That a golf game in a in baseball player; he hits them far, but not too often, and walks a lot. Rasmus hit a grand slam against the Red Sox on Saturday as the Astros win the game 8-3. He went 2 for 4 with a walk and a double, pretty much a microcosm of his career.

While Rasmus is a useful, but not great hitter, every once in a while he posts a great season. He did so at age seasonal age 23 in St. Louis. That was 2010 and Rasmus ended the year with a good BA, and high OBP, and a nearly .500 slugging percentage. He then suffered through two very down years until he slugged .501 in 2013 with an above average OBP. He was then down for another two years (although the power didn’t completely abandon him), and now he is headed for another great season in 2016.

After his age 23 season, I would have expected further improvement. Instead, teams get a useful hitter, who every so often is a huge plus to the offense. The Astros are hoping they are in the sweet spot this year.
