Games of the Day

There seem to be a number of pitchers with good careers but high 2016 ERAs pitching today. The most prominent among them are David Price, who faces Atlanta, and Max Scherzer, who battles Philadelphia. The Phillies send Vince Velásquez against Max in Washington, and Velasquez is off to a great start. He struck out 29 in 19 1/3 innings, walking just three. Scherzer’s main problems are four home runs and eight walks in 25 innings. Eight walks would not be bad for most pitchers, but it’s high compared to his 2015 rate.

Tampa Bay tries to reach .500 in a tight AL East as Ubaldo Jimenez and the Orioles face Jake Odorizzi. Jimenez owns a good ERA despite a high OBP and Slugging percentage allowed. Opponents are just 3 for 21 with runners in scoring position against him, however. Odorizzi isn’t walking many batters, but a high number of extra-base hits with runners on base hurt his ERA.

Finally, Edinson Volquez leads the Royals against Jered Weaver and the Angels. Volquez’s sub-2.00 ERA is helped by keeping the ball in the park, just one home run allowed in 24 innings. That’s half the rate of last season. Weaver is pitching to a lower ERA this season, in part because he’s limited all but one of the his extra base hits allowed to bases empty situations. He setting up scoring opportunities, but he’s preventing the opposition from closing the deal.

Enjoy!
