Week two of the MLB season saw the promising jump in runs disappear. The 2016 season is now just slightly ahead of 2015 after two weeks, 8.36 runs to 8.24 runs. (All stats quoted are from the first two weeks of both seasons.) Home runs remain high, 2.06 per game compared to 1.86 in 2015, and that accounts for almost all the increase. Walks are up to 6.4 per game against 6.0 per game, but non-home run hits are down from 14.7 per game to 14.4 per game as strikeouts are way up, 16.4 per game from 15.3 per game. That’s basically one less opportunity per game to get a hit. As the season goes on, we’ll see if hitters can continue to balance the higher strikeout rate with a higher home run rate.
