Games of the Day

The Mets send Jacob deGrom against the Braves and Aaron Blair and the Braves. deGrom returns to the Mets rotation after a scare with his newborn child:

DeGrom said that 12-day-old Jaxon Anthony was suffering from apnea and would stop breathing while sleeping. After exhaustive tests — including MRIs and X-rays and being hooked up to monitors for several days in a neonatal intensive care unit — the newborn was free of issues for five straight days and was discharged Monday without any procedures being required. The issue more frequently arises with premature babies.

I’m glad things turned out well for deGrom and his family. He comes into the game with a career 2.59 ERA in 53 starts, with 355 K in 337 1/3 innings. Blair makes his major league debut. He posted very good strikeout and home run rates in the minors, with especially good ERAs at both AA and AAA.

Tyler Duffey leads the Twins against Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals in the interleague game of the day. Duffey makes his 2016 debut. He pitched at AAA to start the season as the Twins wanted their fifth starter to get regular work. He posted a 1.72 ERA in three AAA starts. Strasburg is pitching great, and the Nationals are supporting him with 16 runs in his three starts. In good health he remains among the best in the game.

Undefeateds battle in Chicago as Derek Holland and the Rangers take on Mat Latos and the White Sox. Holland comes in with a 2-0 record in three starts, and so far allowed just one home run in 16 2/3 innings. His 11 homers in 58 2/3 innings in 2015 were a big reason for his 4.91 ERA. Latos has yet to allow a home run, and his 0.49 ERA is second only to Jordan Zimmermann‘s 0.00 in the AL.

Enjoy!
