Kershaw and the Three Run Homer

If you watched the Marlins play the Dodgers Tuesday night, you saw something unusual. Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run home run off Clayton Kershaw. It was the 100th regular season home run allowed by Kershaw in his career. Only 12 of those resulted in three-run shots. Fifty five were solo home runs, 33 were two run shots, and Stantons’ was just the 12th three-run shot. No batter hit a grand slam off Kershaw.

Part of that comes from Kershaw avoiding the three-home run situation. Only 507 of the 5931 at bats against him same with two runners on. He also tends to avoid home runs with a man on third base. With just a man on third, men on second or third, and the bases loaded, he has never allowed a home run. Two have come with men on first and third. I wonder if Kershaw just bears down a bit more when a runner is 90 feet away from scoring?

Stanton started hitting again, just in time for Don Mattingly to return to Los Angeles. They won the game Tuesday 6-3 after a 3-2 victory on Monday, ensuring at least a split of the series. Stanton homered in both games, and now has eight home runs in 64 at bats at Dodger Stadium.
