J.A. Happ, one of the leading AL Cy Young contenders, pitches the rubber game of the series for the Blue Jays against the Yankees. CC Sabathia stands in opposition in battle of two-initial left-handers. Happ got hot as July started, going 6-0 in seven starts with a 1.25 ERA. He does not go deep in games, however, with just 43 1/3 innings pitched. Sabathia slipped in the same time frame, after early season success. He owns a 5.85 ERA since the start of July, with 10 home runs allowed in 47 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals and Astros are both fighting for wild card slots as Carlos Martinez takes on Doug Fister. Martinez owns the American League this season, with an 0.45 ERA in three interleague starts. Left-handed batters have a large platoon advantage against Fister, posting a .288/.352/.505 slash line against him.
Stephen Strasburg tries to stop a two-game slide as he pitches for the Nationals against Jon Gray in Colorado. Strasburg allowed 10 runs in his last two starts after allowing nine runs in his previous six games. Gray owns a higher ERA at Coors than on the road, but in many ways he pitches better at home. His strikeout rate is higher and his walk rate is lower, while his home runs are about the same.
