Strasburg to 15

Stephen Strasburg won the 15th game of his season Monday night, the first pitcher in the majors to reach that level. It was an easy win, as the Nationals scored 14 runs, beating Arizona 14-1. Strasburg had a good night, allowing one run, walking two, and striking out six. He also collected three hits at the plate to raise his batting average to .200. Batting title contenders Daniel Murphy and Wilson Ramos collected three hits each, and Trea Turner collected his fourth triple of the year. He is halfway to the leader in just 17 games.

Strasburg moves into third place in the NL in Tom Tango Cy Young points, passing his teammate Max Scherzer. He is a little over eight points behind Madison Bumgarner for the lead. Bumgarner pitched more innings and allowed fewer earned runs. It’s possible that Bumgarner winds up with a better season than Strasburg in terms of ERA and three-true outcomes, but will voters ignore a 22-2 season if that happens. It will be an interesting test of the change in voting patterns over the last decade. Zack Greinke won a Cy Young because he was the best pitcher, even though his record was not outstanding. What we may have is two outstanding pitchers, one clearly better on the non-win side, and one clearly with the better record. Either would be a good choice. And both can hit. 🙂
