Texas Gusher

The Rangers made two big deals near the deadline. First, they acquired Carlos Beltran from the Yankees:

The New York Yankees have agreed to a trade that will send outfielder Carlos Beltran to the Texas Rangers for right-handed pitching prospect Dillon Tate and others, according to multiple reports and confirmed by ESPN.

Beltran will likely take over the DH slot now that Prince Fielder is out after neck surgery. Tate is seasonal age 22 and having an unimpressive season in A ball. I suspect the Rangers soured on him. He was a first-round draft pick in 2015. We’ll see who else the Yankees receive.

Then the Rangers landed catcher Jonathan Lucroy:

The Rangers have landed catcher Jonathan Lucroy and relief pitcher Jeremy Jeffress from the Brewers for Minor League outfielder Lewis Brinson and pitcher Luis Ortiz, sources confirmed Monday. The deal has not been confirmed.

Lucroy had been the Rangers’ No. 1 trade target once they were unable to acquire a front-line starting pitcher.

Lucroy did confirm the trade:

The Rangers catchers hit for power, but at the cost of a high number of outs. Lucroy should do a better job of getting on base. Jeffress is a solid veteran reliever.

The Brewers get Brinson, who did a great job getting on base in high A ball, but hasn’t adjusted to AA yet. Luis is just seasonal age 20, but is showing great control at AA.

Most of the trades I’ve seen so far involved very good prospects. Teams are building for the future.
