The Old Greinke

The Dodgers pounded Zack Greinke for five home runs Monday night. Adrian Gonzalez hit one in the fourth, then the Dodgers hit four in the fifth inning to end Greinke’s night:

It marked the second time this season the Dodgers hit four homers in a single inning, the other being Aug. 22 against the Reds. Before that, the team hadn’t done it since 2006.

Greinke allowed 21 home runs so far this season. The last time he allowed that many in a season was in 2008. Through that season he allowed 83 home runs in 658 2/3 innings, a rate of 1.13 per nine IP. From 2009 through 2015, he allowed 112 home runs in 1436 IP, a rate of 0.70 HR per 9 IP. This season his rate is 1.34 per 9 IP. Greinke is a proponent of the DIPS theory of pitching. He concentrates on preventing walks and home runs, letting his fielders take care of the rest of the balls in play. Something is off this season.

The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 10-2, and now lead the NL West by four games over San Francisco.
